Sports Skull by Belén te Pinta

This soccer skull design has a wow effect because of its position using the model’s eye as a part of it. However, it is quite simple because we only need black, white and a couple of brushes.

It can be easily changed into a normal skull or into any other sports design just changing the features of the "head ball".

Children will love seeing their skulls blink!

Step 1

I started with a quick outline of the skull mainly because I painted it on myself and I didn’t want to get the proportions wrong. I think this step wouldn’t be necessary if I painted it on another person.

Step 2

With a filbert brush, fill in with white the full skull face, leaving blank the black spaces shown below.

A trick when filling big spaces with white if we want a flawless finish is to go over the painting with a sponge while it is still damp.

Step 3

With a round brush, fill in the blank areas with black (pentagon shape in the centre and sides of the head, eye sockets, nose and jaw).

Step 4

Outline the whole design with a thin brush and draw the lines of the “ball head,” eyebrows, chin bones and mouth.

Step 5

Paint the teeth flicking a thin brush from the “smile line” to the sides of it in order to get sharp points.

With a clean damp brush go over the outlines to make them softer and to give some sort of shadow under the skull.

Step 6

With a filbert brush drag the black paint in some areas to give more depth to the design (under the eyebrows, eyes, jaw, etc).

Apply some white highlights on top of the black ball pieces, and in the prominent parts of the bones.

For the final shot I added some black drops falling from the skull and a red dramatic eyeball.
